Hem Incense are the pioneers in the field of incense manufacturing in India and one of the leading exporters of incense sticks all over the world

Besides being very innovative in meeting the diverse needs of our consumers, we are extremely conscious of our products and manufacture the same adhering to the highest standards of quality control and with utmost care that they are utterly harmless and cause least pollution to the environment. We enjoy unstinted appreciation and patronage of our customers and their safety is our highest concern.

It is very unfortunate that on the website of RAPEX it is mentioned that the incense sticks produced by us allegedly pose serious risk as the incense sticks release aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene and styrene during and after combustion and the estimated emissions exceed the recommended safe concentration for indoor air. It is further notified on the website that the aromatic hydrocarbons are allegedly toxic when inhaled or ingested and are irritant to eyes and skin and since the product is intended for use in closed environment, the release of benzene and toluene is considered harmful to health.

In view of the above, we have been requesting the RAPEX Authorities in Italy and in Brussels to share the copies of Complaints, if any alongwith the Reports of the tests carried out by them before arriving at the above conclusion. We are given to understand that there are no set parameters or standards set for materials to be used in incense sticks and there is no fixed procedure, standards or tests for testing the incense sticks.

By this communication, we would like to inform all our customers and clients across the globe that the Ministry of Health, Department of Health and Innovation, Directorate of General Safety, Government of Italy has informed that the National Institute of Health has undertaken a project for “identification of volatile organic compounds produced by the burning of incense on scientific bases to facilitate assessment and restriction of use” [1] and concluded that the use of the said products in a suitably ventilated rooms should not prove harmful for health. It has been noted in the said report that analyzing only the section containing the scented paste did not reveal the presence of either benzene or toluene and consequently the same are formed only during the process of burning. It has also been mentioned that incense based preparation are not classifiable based on its composition as hazardous according to Legislative Decree No.65/2003, as amended, which governs the classification, labeling and packaging of hazardous preparation and therefore labeling the risk warning and precaution based on the risk classification of the products in question is not applicable.

The Customs and Monopolies Office, associated with Inter-regional Department for Liguria, Piedmont and Valle D’Aoata, has vide its communication dated 25th February, 2015 bearing reference No.RV 1340,[2] forwarded a Technical Report drawn by ARPA Piedmont, which is the Regional Environmental Protection Agency, bearing Ref. No. 14113 dated 24 th February, 2015, in respect of sampling of incense originating from India, wherein they were pleased to advise that the use of the said products on an absolutely occasional basis and in suitably ventilated rooms should not prove harmful for health

Besides the above, we would also like to inform you that our products have been tested by the world’s most recognized laboratories and scientists and the same have been found to be absolutely harmless. The reports of the laboratories have been displayed on our website,[3]

We would like to assure all our Customers and Consumers that WE DO NOT ADD BENZENE AND TOLUENE TO HEM INCENSE. The incense manufactured by us contain charcoal, jigat, wood powder and fragrance, derived from a blend of natural and aromatic compounds.

We are presently in dialogue and communication with the RAPEX Authorities in Italy and Brussels in person and through the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts, affiliated to the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India and we are confident that the situation will be resolved in due course.

We thank you for your continued support and faith in our products and would like to reiterate our commitment to continue the manufacturing and selling of perfectly natural and harmless incense sticks.
